KEEP CHILDREN SAFE AROUND WATER

In Victoria over the past 20 years,

• 71 children aged 0-4 years drowned, – 36% of these children were aged just

1 year,

• 36% of drownings occurred in summer,

• 33% occurred in a swimming pool and,

• 70% occurred following a fall into water. In NSW over the same period,

• 164 children aged 0-4 years drowned, – 38% of these children were aged 1 year,

• 33% of drownings occurred in summer,

• 60% occurred in a swimming pool and,

• 75% occurred following a fall into water. Tips to keep kids safe:

1. Supervise. Actively supervise children around water

2. Restrict. Restrict children’s access to water

3. Teach. Teach children water safety skills 4. Respond. Learn how to respond in the case of an emergency.
